The Senate Banking Committee voted 12-10 yesterday to confirm Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). The vote was along party lines. Republicans have objected to Watt’s nomination, calling for an apolitical technocrat to fill the position.
The committee also voted by voice to confirm Jason Furman as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers; Kara Stein, Michael Piwowar, and current chair Mary Jo White to terms on the Securities and Exchange Commission; and Richard Metsger to the National Credit Union Administration board. All nominees will now go to the Senate floor for final confirmation.
